How to clean with Cream of Tartar

Cream of tartar

The Versatility of Cream of Tartar: Your Go-To Non-Toxic Cleaning Staple

Cream of tartar is a true cleaning powerhouse, perfect for a variety of non-toxic cleaning tasks around the home. Not only can it tackle tough stains and clean drains, but it’s also effective at warding off bugs and can even be used in your laundry routine.

I always keep a jar in my utility room for those unexpected stain emergencies. When mixed with water or dish soap to create a paste, cream of tartar can clean everything from clogged drains to stained coffee pots.

Stain Remover

Natural ingredients are essential for making effective and eco-friendly cleaning solutions. I always keep a few spare spray bottles on hand for my DIY cleaning recipes. Our garment refresher actually started as an experimental spray bottle mix.

To make your own stain remover, combine three tablespoons of cream of tartar with half as much glycerine. Shake well in a small spray bottle. This mixture is perfect for pre-treating stains on garments before laundering—super handy and chemical-free.

Rust Remover

Cream of tartar works wonders on rust stains, especially when paired with our old favorite, bicarbonate of soda.

You will need:

  • 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar
  • 4 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda
  • A little water

Mix the ingredients with enough water to form a smooth paste. Apply to the rust stain and let it sit for about 30 minutes before wiping clean. It’s an easy and effective solution for stubborn rust.

Drain Cleaner

For a natural drain cleaner that eliminates odors and freshens your drains, try this simple recipe. I’m always mindful of the chemicals I use, especially when it comes to products that can harm our waterways. This natural solution lets you clean without guilt.

You will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar
  • 32 grams of baking soda
  • 32 grams of salt
  • 236 ml of water

Pour the dry ingredients down the drain, followed by the water. Let it sit for a few minutes, then run hot water through the drain to finish. It’s a quick and eco-friendly way to keep your drains fresh.
