How to naturally clean and freshen your microwave

Scented Vinegar

A clean kitchen is one of those small things that makes daily life feel more under control, and few appliances benefit more from a little attention than the microwave - a hardworking object that is very good at being ignored. Keeping it clean isn’t just about hygiene; it also helps it live a longer, happier life.

The good news is that you don’t need anything harsh or synthetic to restore it to a more dignified state. For everyday splatters (the sort that slowly make a microwave look faintly defeated), this is all you need to do.

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with a cup of water, half a lemon and a couple of tablespoons of Scented Vinegar. The vinegar does the hard work, breaking down grease and grime, while the lemon keeps everything smelling reassuringly fresh. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat on high for five minutes. The steam will gently loosen anything stubborn that’s clinging on.

Once it’s finished — carefully, as the bowl will be hot — remove it and wipe the interior, turntable included, with a linen cloth. You’ll find most of the mess lifts away with very little persuasion, which is deeply satisfying.

For anything that’s properly stuck, a little extra help is in order. Dip your cloth, or a Copper Pad, into some water with a drop or two of dish wash and gently work at the mark. The copper is naturally abrasive but kind, meaning it removes residue without scratching — exactly what you want.

Don’t neglect the outside, either. A simple mix of water and Scented Vinegar wiped over the exterior will leave it clean, shiny and smelling far better than most commercial sprays manage.

To keep things ticking along nicely, a quick wipe of the interior with Scented Vinegar every so often is usually enough. It’s an easy habit, and one that makes the whole kitchen feel calmer and healthier.

Deep cleaning your microwave doesn’t need to involve eye-watering chemicals or dramatic effort. A little steam, a little vinegar and a few quiet minutes are more than enough — with the added bonus that your kitchen smells lovely afterwards.

If you’d like more ideas for using vinegar as a natural cleaner, you’ll find plenty more ways to put it to work. And as ever, do let me know if you have any questions - I’m always happy to help.
