It starts with a mist... and suddenly there is Christmas in the air.
Your breath hanging in the cold as you hurry home. Frost feathering the windows while you are tucked under a rug. Eucalyptus garlands tumbling along the mantel and enough stray greenery to suggest the garden has moved in for Christmas.
Oranges studded with cloves. In the kitchen black cherries are warming gently on the stove, their dark sweet juices bubbling with cinnamon. Someone steals a taste straight from the pan. Roses glow in the candlelight.
The tree lights come on. A cork pops. The film starts, the one everybody knows by heart. The chocolates meant for later are already open. And there is mistletoe in the doorway which nobody is admitting to having put there. The fire is down to embers now.
