Last week I had a slightly frantic call from a customer whose new puppy had christened the carpet in her Airbnb. Not ideal. Luckily, I had a few tricks up my sleeve and all was saved.
And now we’ve added Tatty to the mix at home, there’s been the particular joy (and I use that word loosely) of house training all over again so this feels very on brand.
The golden rule: act fast. Blot, don’t scrub, kitchen roll, old towel, whatever’s to hand. Get as much of it up as you can before it settles in and makes itself comfortable.
For the actual clean, bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar are your friends. Sprinkle the bicarb generously, pour over the vinegar, let it fizz away like a small science experiment, then blot it all up. It deals with both stain and smell rather brilliantly.
If things are a bit more… ingrained, go in with a proper cleaner, a toothbrush, and warm water, then leave it to dry thoroughly.
As for the smell, vinegar wins again. It neutralises the bacteria (which is what you’re actually smelling), so don’t be shy with it. Leave it for a good 20 minutes, blot, and repeat if needed.
